The Story Behind the Fund
Steel City Softball League owes so much to Andy Usner, the original owner of Brewer’s Bar and father of our longtime supporter, Carol Held. Back when the league was just getting started, finding umpires was nearly impossible — the stigma against queer communities made it an uphill battle. Andy, a Pittsburgh police officer at the time, stepped in as an umpire himself and brought along fellow officers who believed in making the field a safe, welcoming place for everyone. He didn’t stop there — Andy provided years of financial support that helped SCSL grow into the league it is today.
Andy’s heart extended far beyond the diamond. He opened his doors to LGBTQIA+ individuals who had been turned away by their own families, offering rooms above Brewer’s Bar as a safe haven. During the devastating AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and early 1990s, many gay men found refuge, dignity, and care in their final days at Brewer’s — all because of Andy and his family.
That same spirit lives on through Carol, who continues to provide housing and support for community members in need. In Andy’s honor, SCSL created this fund to make sure that financial hardship never keeps someone off the field. Every dollar donated goes directly toward helping a community member play.
