The Steel City Softball League (SCSL) owes a significant part of its success to the unwavering support of Andy Usner, the original owner of Brewer’s Bar and father of the current owner, Carol Held. In the league’s nascent days, finding umpires was a major challenge due to the prevalent stigma against queer communities. Andy Usner, a Pittsburgh police officer at the time, stepped in as an umpire, bringing along fellow ally officers to enhance the safety and inclusiveness of the league. His contribution wasn’t just limited to his time and presence; he also provided substantial financial support to SCSL over many seasons, a legacy that Carol continues to uphold. The stability and strength of SCSL today can be largely attributed to the support from Brewer’s.

Andy’s commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community extended beyond the softball field. He was a beacon of hope for many LGBTQIA+ individuals who faced rejection from their families. Andy generously offered accommodation in the living spaces above Brewer’s Bar, creating a sanctuary for those in need. During the devastating AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and early 1990s, many gay men found refuge, acceptance, and care in their last days at Brewer’s, thanks to Andy and his family.

This spirit of compassion and support is carried forward by Carol, as Brewer’s continues to provide housing for community members facing housing and financial challenges. In honor of Andy’s profound impact, SCSL has established a fund to aid community members experiencing financial hardship, ensuring their participation in the league. This fund is dedicated solely to this purpose, continuing Andy’s legacy of support and inclusiveness.

Our Pay-It-Forward program is meant to help those in our community that would like to play Softball, but are currently under a financial hardship.

With your donation, we will put these funds explicitly toward individuals that apply to this program.

If you’d like to donate to the fund, you can either give directly through PayPal or through League Apps.
